Abonti Barkat is a Lecturer of Economics at East West University, where she joined the faculty in 2025. She teaches undergraduate courses in Microeconomics and Mathematics for Economics and is passionate about inspiring students to think critically and apply economic reasoning to real-world issues.
Her research interests include development economics and behavioral economics. Her first academic publication examined how individuals perceive and respond to different types of criminal activity, highlighting the role of personal perceptions and behavior in influencing social and economic outcomes.
Building on this work, her master's thesis explored gender-related behavioral and structural issues in developing economies. It specifically examined the perceived assertiveness of rural Bangladeshi women in expressing their views on issues that required public opinion. Her research provides insights into the social, institutional, and economic barriers that affect women's agency and participation in civic life.
