Seminar on Trade Unions and Labour Rights Under BLA 2006 Held at East West University

On May 6, 2025, the Department of Business Administration at East West University organized a seminar titled "From Law to Labour: Trade Union & CBA Under BLA 2006". The guest speaker was Ms. Zariath Tamanna, Team Leader of the ILO-Better Work Bangladesh Program. The event started at 3:20 PM with the arrival of the guest, followed by her introduction at 3:24 PM. Many faculty members from the department attended the seminar, including Dr. Rumana Afroze, Dr. Md. Atiqur Rahman Sarker, Ms. Silvia Akter, Dr. Shabiha Akter, Ms. Tamanna Parvin Eva, Mr. Abdullal Al Sayeed, Ms. Shabiha Afrin Sharna, Ms. Fairose Farin, and Ms.Umme Sahera Naomi. Then comes the most heartfelt part of the session. A song by Bhupen Hazarika " মানুষ মানুষের জন্য " was played before presenting a token of appreciation to the guest at 3:32 PM. A group photo was taken at 3:35 PM.

Ms. Tamanna began her speech right after the photo session. She expressed her happiness that the students are learning Human Resource Management (HRM) and shared that she enjoys speaking directly to students. In her talk, she discussed many important topics such as trade unions, the International Labour Conference (ILC), Article 16 on labour inspection systems, freedom of association, and Collective Bargaining Agents (CBA). She also spoke about human rights violations in supply chains and how they are connected to labour laws and workers' rights.

A big part of her speech focused on the Bangladesh Labour Act (BLA). She explained several sections from the Act in a way that students could understand. She highlighted the importance of knowing these laws to protect workers and improve workplace conditions. Ms. Tamanna also emphasized the foundation of human rights and the role of organizations like the ILO in promoting fair labour practices. The seminar ended at 4:45 PM after a very informative and engaging session.
