Demographic Dividend and Worker Welfare: Key Takeaways from East West University’s Seminar on RMG Sector of Bangladesh

East West University, Department of Business Administration, has successfully organized a seminar titled “Compensation & Welfare Benefits of RMG Workers in Bangladesh” on September 15, 2024 at 04.00 PM to 6.00 PM for all the students major in Human Resource Management.

The keynote speaker, Mr. Imran Nazmul Kopol, Country Manager (Sutari GmbH) and National Consultant (Better Works Bangladesh, International Labour Oorganization-ILO), addressed the critical issues surrounding the welfare of the country’s 4 million-strong RMG workforce. Hon’ble resource person delved into the Bangladesh Labour Act-2006 and its amendments, highlighting key aspects such as minimum wage standards, maternity leave, and social security measures aimed at protecting workers. He also discussed the economic impact of the RMG sector, which contributes 83% to the nation's export earnings, and the ongoing efforts to improve working conditions and labor productivity.

In addition to BLA-2006, Mr. Imran Nazmul Kopol, captivated the audience by discussing the significance of the country's "demographic dividend" in driving the growth of the RMG sector.

At this event, Academics Dr. Md. Atiqur Rahman Sarker (Associate Professor), Ms. Tamanna Parvin Eva (Senior Lecturer), Abdullah Al Sayed (Lecturer); Industry professionals Mr. Md. Syfur Rahman (Corporate Responsibility Manager, Sutari Gmbh & Labour Court Member, People’s Republic of Bangladesh), Mr. Tawsif Kabir (Territory Officer, BAT Bangladesh) and more than a hundred students as attendees were present.

Towards the end of the seminar, attendees had a lively Q&A session with Speaker, Academics and the Industry Professionals. The event concluded on a lively note, with a group of EWU Students performing songs, adding a celebratory and uplifting end to a thought-provoking session.
